2009 is a good year for wild flowers, but not outstanding. If you choose time and place carefully there is a lot of beauty to be seen. The following sites were near peak on March 30, 2009. For current updates on where the flowers are blooming, consult the Wildflower Hotsheet at www.calphoto.com/wflower.htm and www.desertusa.com/wildflo/wildupdates.html.
Antelope Valley Poppy
Poppies should be at their best in the Antelope Valley area. They are viewed best from public roads this year, as the Poppy Reserve is not blooming so well this year. We recommend the following loop. Take Hwy 138 west to Fwy 14 north. Exit at Avenue I west, and drive to 110th St. Turn north and watch for flowers on both sides of the road. Turn west onto Avenue D (Hwy 138). There should be good flowers again on both sides of the road as you travel west. When you reach 170th street, turn south and east on Lancaster road. Stop often and walk among the flowers.
Another place that has good reports is in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest just south of Lancaster. From San Bernardino, travel west on Hwy 138 to Fwy 14. However do not join Fwy 14 as you would if going to the Poppy area (above). Instead continue under the Fwy and travel on W Palmdale Blvd until it becomes Elizabeth Lake Road. Drive past Elizabeth Lake toward Hughes Lake. The flowers on the south hillsides between these two lakes are reported to be very good, with goldfields, lupines and poppies, en masse.
There are still many individual flowers blooming for those of you who are serious wildflower watchers:
Santa Rosa Plateau has 77 species flowering at present including the lovely pink checker bloom and blue eyed grass. (No more chocolate lilies)
