The Blue Zones

Blue Zones

In November 2005 there was a report in the National Geographic magazine about three areas of the world with high numbers of people with 90 and 100 years old still living normal and productive lives: Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy and Loma Linda in the US. Dan Buettner was the reporter who visited those places, he finally wrote a book, “The Blue Zones.”

Loma Linda Blue Zone

Loma Linda was identified as the representation of Seventh-day Adventists who have a peculiar lifestyle compared to the others around the country. In general the three blue zones mentioned in the NG magazine have six lifestyle secrets in common: don’t smoke, put family first, be active every day, keep socially engaged, eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Adventists have three more factors identified like eat nuts, observe the Sabbath and have faith.

Lessons from the blue zones

The subtitle of the “The blue zones” book says, “Lessons for living longer from the people who’ve lived the longest. During the Winter Wednesdays in the coming January, we will present the seminar “Living longer in the blue zone,” where we will discuss those longevity lessons, specially the ones that characterize the Seventh-day Adventists.

Living longer in the blue zone

There will be five sessions with five different speakers, experts in their specific field to explore the local secrets of our blue zone. On February 03 we will bring at least one local blue zone citizen who will be interviewed to share his own secrets of longevity. Please join us in this program, “Living longer in the blue zone” to learn how you can also belong to the blue zone club. See below the list of speakers and topics.

Jan 13  Hildemar Dos Santos - Smart strategies to live in the blue zone – Interviewing a blue zone citizen.
Jan 20  Warren Peters – The blue zone diet and weight issues.
Jan 27  Ernie Medina – Keep moving in the blue zone.

InStep for Life

InStep for Life

InStep for Life is at the University Church in January 2010

InStep for Life is a walking and fitness program being launched in January 2010 at the Loma Linda University Church and other neighboring churches.

Every church member is encouraged to invite friends and family to walk regularly and be as physically active as possible throughout the coming New Year.

Regular activity is designed to make you feel stronger and more alive. It can be a fun way to be with your family or friends. It helps you improve your health. If you participate, you will feel better, look better, and your body and mind will work better.

It’s easy to start. Here’s how.

  1. Get a starter kit from your local InStep for Life coordinator or go directly to www.InStepForLife.com and download your own starter kit.
  2. Get a pedometer. Research shows that this is the best way to help most people improve their activity level. Your Starter Kit will tell you how to order your pedometer. InStep can also include other activities such as swimming, biking, or active sports.
  3. Set a goal and start walking and recording your daily steps on the Fitness Log in your starter kit. Aim for at least 30 minutes of being physically active daily. As you get stronger and fitter, work up to walking 10,000 steps a day for best health!
  4. Enlist a fitness buddy. Invite your spouse, son, or daughter to
Walk, too. Encourage a friend or neighbor to join you. Besides the quality time this could lead to a witnessing tool!
  5. Turn in a report of your activity monthly to your local InStep coordinator so your local church can track participation and progress.
Earn awards, such as the One Million Steps Award (10,000 steps for 100+ days in one year) or 250-, 500-, 1,000-mile awards.

Make 2010 the best year of your life!

Join InStep for Life and experience the abundant health God wants everyone to enjoy as we stay InStep with Him. Invite family and friends to join you as well.

InStep for Life is a North American Health Ministries Initiative. The goal is for as many members as possible in Adventist churches, schools, institutions and friends to join. For more information, talk to your local InStep Coordinator or visit the InStep for Life website: www.InStepForLife.com
