suggested ways to connect with your matched recipient

When you call the recipient:

Gauge the conversation. You don’t have to say everything on the script. It is simply a guide for your conversation if you get stuck somewhere. Since the families are aware they will be receiving a call, they will most likely be open to speaking with you. Be sure to be energetic and friendly.

  • My name is _________ and I am from the Loma Linda University Church.
  • How are you today?
  • You recently signed up for Thanksgiving baskets and my family will be working with you to make sure we are able to provide exactly what you need for the holiday.

Gathering Information:

  • Would you mind sharing your family’s favorite meals with me?
  • Are there any particular food items that you would like to have for your Thanksgiving dinner?
  • Are there any food items or dietary restrictions in your family?

Ending the Conversation:

  • Thank you for speaking with me today and I will be in contact with you. Have a nice day. Goodbye.

When you deliver a meal:

We encourage you to really engage with the recipient. Granted, some people may be shy or may not wish to return the warmth. Fair enough. But it’s great that you’re meeting them halfway. While it can feel uncomfortable meeting new people, there’s no need to feel awkward. Some people may feel ashamed of receiving help. Be reassuring. Say “Thank You” and let them know you’re so glad you can do this for them.

Conversation Starters:

  • Hi, my name’s ______________, and we’re from the Loma Linda University Church. We’re here to deliver the Thanksgiving Basket.
  • How are you?
  • Tell me about your family? Do you have a lot of family here? (Don’t ask about their work some of them might be on welfare or unemployed)
  • I noticed (something about their house/yard) I really like it.
