Current Sermon Series: Conversations of the Heart

Do you suppose Charles Dickens’ famous opening words in A Tale of Two Cities could be adapted to apply to prayer?

It is the best of spiritual undertakings, it is the hardest of spiritual acts; it is the discipline of wisdom, it is an endeavor some think of as foolish; it is the epitome of belief, it sometimes struggles with incredulity; it is engaged in the light, it is tested in the darkness; it is a harbinger of hope, but it can also represent the winter of despair…

Doesn’t that represent the journey most of us have with prayer? The highs. The lows. The hope. The sorrow. The answers. The questions.

Yet, it is our lifeline to God. Through prayer we commune, listen, grow, take the next faithful step, and struggle our way through to healthy relationship with our heavenly Father. Sometimes we pray in praise, other times we weep with questions.

Wherever you are with prayer, don’t stop talking to God. Keep speaking. Listen. Weep. Wait. And open your heart to God as to a friend.
